BOLTON West MP Julie Hilling relished the opportunity to speak about the history of Parliament in a presentation to Westhoughton History Group at their local museum.
Ms. Hilling spoke for over an hour at Westhoughton Library about the history of the Houses of Parliament and how it has developed into the modern democracy it is today.
Over fifty history group members attended the event to listen to Ms. Hilling’s presentation, which covered Parliamentary buildings and the democratic development of Parliament, the development of votes for all, including the struggle of the Suffragette Movement in attempting to get votes for women, and the way current customs have been shaped by the past.
Ms. Hilling said: “It was a great opportunity to address so many enthusiastic historians from Westhoughton about how our democracy has been shaped over the centuries.
“Westhoughton History Group do so much to celebrate our local history and hold many events to highlight important dates ranging from the Pretoria Pit disaster to commemorating those who lost their lives in the First World War.”
If anyone would like to get involved in Westhoughton History Group they meet on a regular basis and hold a number of events across the year. For more information check out their website at https://westhoughtonhistorygroup.org.uk
